Fort Myers Beach is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Cape Coral–Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is on Estero Island, off the southwest coast of Florida, between Fort Myers and Naples. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,286.
The history of Fort Myers Beach dates back to the early 1800s, when it was a small fishing village. The first permanent settlers arrived in the area in 1845. In 1869, the United States
Army built a fort on the island to protect the area from Confederate raiders. The fort was named Fort Myers after Colonel Abraham C. Myers, who was the commander of the U.S. Army's Department of the South.
After the Civil War, the fort was abandoned. The area remained a small fishing village until the early 1900s, when it began to develop as a tourist destination. The first hotel on the island was built in 1913. In the 1920s, the area experienced a boom in development, as many people from the Midwest and Northeast moved to Florida.
Fort Myers Beach continued to grow in the following decades. In the 1950s, the city became a popular destination for retirees. In the 1960s, the city experienced a second boom in development, as many people from the Northeast moved to Florida.
Today, Fort Myers Beach is a popular tourist destination. The city is known for its beautiful beaches, clear water, and relaxed atmosphere. It is also home to a number of shops, restaurants, and bars.
